ChatBouncer help center

Set up, install and train your chat box, handle handoffs, manage your plan and fix common problems. Can't find it? Email [email protected]. A real person answers.

1 Getting started

What is ChatBouncer?

ChatBouncer is an AI chat box for your website. It answers your visitors 24/7 from your own business info: hours, prices, services, FAQs and policies. When it isn't sure, it tells the customer the business will confirm and emails you the question with the customer's contact details. It also turns away spam, abuse, off-topic messages and prompt tricks like "ignore your instructions."

It's built for any business of any size, anywhere.

How do I get started?
  1. Create your account at chatbouncer.com/signup. You need your name, your email and a password of at least 10 characters.
  2. Build your chat box. Enter your website address and ChatBouncer reads your site to pull in your hours, prices, services and FAQs.
  3. Check your info in the Business info & preview tab. Fix anything that's wrong and add anything that's missing.
  4. Try it in the Preview chat. Ask what your customers ask.
  5. Start your free trial by picking a plan on the Billing page. A card is required, but you won't be charged until the 14-day trial ends. The trial starts at checkout, not when you sign up.
  6. Install it on your website (see Installing the chat box) and press Go live.

Building your chat box and testing it in the Preview chat is free. You only need to start the trial when you're ready to put it on your website.

What's on my dashboard?

Each chat box (one per website) has these tabs:

  • Handoff inbox: conversations where a customer needs a person. Reply here or reply to the notification email.
  • Chat history: every conversation your chat box has had.
  • Unanswered: questions your chat box couldn't answer from your info. Type an answer once and it becomes an FAQ.
  • Widget & embed: your install code, brand color, button text, position and your allowed website domains.
  • Integrations (Pro and Business): Slack alerts and outgoing webhooks for Zapier or other tools.
  • Business info & preview: everything your chat box knows, plus a Preview chat to test it.

You'll also see how complete your info is (your Knowledge percentage, with what's missing) and Messages this month. Until your chat box is live, a Get your chat live checklist shows what's left.

2 Installing the chat box on your website

How do I get my install code?
  1. In your dashboard, open your chat box and go to the Widget & embed tab.
  2. Under Your website domains, add every address your site uses (for example yourbusiness.com, plus any test or staging address) and save. The chat box only runs on the addresses you list.
  3. Click Copy code. It's one line that looks like this (yours has your own key): <script src="…/w.js" data-key="pk_…" async></script>
Any website

Paste your code just above the closing </body> tag on every page, or once in your site's shared template, footer file or site-wide custom code setting. Save and publish, check that the chat button shows in the bottom corner, then press Go live in your dashboard. The code loads after your page (async), so it won't slow your site down. Full guide.

WordPress and WooCommerce

Our free plugin adds the chat box to every page with no code editing. Download chatbouncer-wordpress.zip (don't unzip it), go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin, install and activate it, then paste your code or key under Settings > ChatBouncer and save. Using a caching plugin? Clear its cache. ChatBouncer in the WordPress plugin directory is coming soon. Full guide.

Shopify

ChatBouncer in the Shopify App Store is coming soon. For now we send you a private install link: add both your own domain and your yourstore.myshopify.com address on the Widget & embed tab, then email [email protected] with your .myshopify.com address. After installing, turn on the ChatBouncer app embed in your theme editor. You can also paste the code into layout/theme.liquid yourself. Full guide.

Can't find yours? The any website guide works anywhere you can add code, or email [email protected].

Can I change how it looks?

Yes. On the Widget & embed tab you can set your brand color, the button text, and whether the button sits bottom right or bottom left, then click Save widget settings. On the Business plan you can also tick Hide "Powered by ChatBouncer".

3 Training the chat box on your business

Where does my chat box get its answers?

Only from the info you give it. It won't guess. In Business info & preview you'll find your business info, hours, menu or services, FAQ, Documents (Pro and Business), Booking & payments links, Personality, Import from website and the Preview chat. Save, and your chat box uses the new info right away.

How do I update it from my website?

When you build your chat box, ChatBouncer reads your website and fills in what it finds. Always check each tab afterward. If you update your website later, open Import from website, scan again and save.

How do I teach it from real questions?

When a visitor asks something your chat box can't answer, it shows up on the Unanswered tab. Type your answer and click Add this answer to my bot. It becomes an FAQ your chat box uses from then on.

Can I upload PDF and Word documents?

Yes, on Pro (up to 15 documents) and Business (up to 50). Open Business info & preview, go to Documents and upload PDF or Word (.docx) files. ChatBouncer adds the facts in them to what your chat box knows. Scanned PDFs (a photo of a page) can't be read, because ChatBouncer reads the text inside the file. Use the original digital file instead.

4 When a customer needs a person

How do handoffs work?

When your chat box can't answer, or a customer asks for a person, it tells them the business will confirm and asks for their contact details. You get an email with the question and the customer's details, and the conversation shows in your Handoff inbox. Reply from the dashboard with Send reply, or reply to the notification email. The customer sees your reply in the chat window.

Can I take over a chat myself?

Yes. As soon as you or a teammate replies, the AI pauses in that chat and the visitor sees that a person from your business has joined. It stays paused for 30 minutes. Click Resume AI to hand it back sooner.

Can I get alerts in Slack or Zapier?

Yes, on Pro and Business. On the Integrations tab, paste a Slack incoming webhook URL and click Save Slack, or paste a Zapier "Catch Hook" (or any HTTPS webhook address) under Outgoing webhook, then Send test. There's no ChatBouncer app in the Zapier directory; you connect it with a webhook.

5 Team seats

How many people can log in?

Starter includes 1 seat, Pro 3 and Business 10 (you count as one). Open Team in your dashboard, enter a teammate's email, pick a role and send the invite. The invite link works for 7 days.

What can each role do?
  • Owner: everything, including billing and managing the team.
  • Admin: edits chat boxes, the widget and integrations, and works the handoff inbox.
  • Agent: works the handoff inbox and replies in chats.

Only the account owner can see or change billing.

6 Plans and billing

What are the plans?
  • Starter, $29 a month: 1 website, 1,500 customer messages a month, 1 team seat.
  • Pro, $59 a month: up to 3 websites, 5,000 messages a month shared, 3 team seats, PDF & Word documents (up to 15), Slack & Zapier connections, priority email support.
  • Business, $119 a month: up to 10 websites, 15,000 messages a month shared, 10 team seats, documents (up to 50), Slack & Zapier, white label, priority email support.

Every plan includes a 14-day free trial. Prices are in US dollars. Full comparison on the pricing page.

What happens if I go over my monthly message limit?

On a paid plan, your chat box keeps working. Each time you go past your plan's monthly messages, we add another 1,500 messages for $15, charged right away to the card on file. Extra charges are capped at $300 a month.

  • Example: Starter includes 1,500 messages. If you use 2,400 in a month, that's one extra block: $29 + $15 = $44 for that month.
  • If extra charges reach $300, or an extra charge can't be collected, your chat box pauses until the next month starts or the charge is paid. Visitors see a short message pointing them to your other contact options.
  • If your account is past due (a subscription payment didn't go through), it doesn't get extra messages. At the limit, your chat box pauses until your messages reset.
  • We let you know as you get close. We email your account's billing email when you've used 80% of your monthly messages, and again at 100%.
  • Your messages reset on the 1st of each month. You can see what you've used anytime under Messages this month on your dashboard and on your Billing page.
  • Receipts for extra-message charges come from Stripe and show on your Billing page under Card, invoices & cancel.

During a free trial it's different: you're never charged extra, and the chat box stops at your plan's limit (see The free trial). Full details are in our Terms.

Can I switch plans?

Yes, anytime from your Billing page. If you move to a bigger plan after your trial, the price difference for the rest of the month is added to your next invoice. To move to a plan with fewer websites, turn some websites off first.

Where do I update my card or get invoices?

On your Billing page, click Card, invoices & cancel. Payments are handled by Stripe; we never see your full card number.

What happens if a payment fails?

Your chat widget pauses until billing is fixed. Your dashboard shows a Fix billing button; update your card and it starts answering again.

Do you have a referral program?

Yes. Refer another business to ChatBouncer and your next month is on us. Free-month credits show on your Billing page and apply automatically.

7 The free trial

How does the free trial work?

Every plan comes with a 14-day free trial. You start it by picking a plan on your Billing page and adding a card. Cancel before it ends and you won't be charged.

Can I try it before I start the trial?

Yes. Build your chat box and test it in the Preview chat for free, without a card. You can also try a free preview on our homepage: type your website address and we'll build a preview chat box from it, no signup needed.

When does my trial start?

At checkout, when you pick a plan and add your card. Signing up and building your chat box doesn't start the clock.

Is there a message limit during the trial?

Yes. The trial includes the same monthly messages as the plan you picked: 1,500 on Starter, 5,000 on Pro and 15,000 on Business. You're never charged anything extra during a trial. We email you when you've used 80% of your trial messages, and again at 100%. If your chat box reaches the limit during the trial, it stops answering and asks visitors to leave their contact details so you can reply personally. You get those messages as usual.

8 Cancelling

How do I cancel?

Go to your Billing page, click Card, invoices & cancel, and cancel there. You can cancel anytime. It takes effect at the end of your current billing period. Cancel during your free trial and you won't be charged.

Do you give refunds?

Except where the law requires otherwise, we don't refund partial months (see our Terms). If you think you were charged by mistake, email [email protected].

How do I delete a chat box?

At the bottom of your chat box's page, in the Danger zone, click Delete. This removes the chat box and its chat history, and the code on your website stops working. It can't be undone.

9 Privacy and data

What do you store, and who handles it?

Our Privacy Policy has the details. In short: we keep your account and business info and the chats on your widget; we don't sell personal information, don't use visitor conversations for advertising and don't use them to train our own AI models. The widget doesn't set advertising or tracking cookies. Vendors that help run ChatBouncer (xAI, Hostinger, Railway, Supabase, Stripe and our email provider) get only what they need.

Do visitors know they're talking to AI?

Yes. The widget tells visitors they're chatting with an AI assistant. Please don't hide or remove that notice. Visitors shouldn't share sensitive information such as health details, payment card numbers or passwords.

How long do you keep data?

While your account is active. When an account is closed, we delete its business information and conversations within 90 days, unless the law requires us to keep them longer. Billing records are kept as tax law requires. You can ask us to delete specific conversations sooner by emailing [email protected].

10 Troubleshooting

The chat button doesn't show on my site
  1. Check the address in your browser matches one listed under Your website domains (including any www. or .myshopify.com version).
  2. Make sure the code is saved and published, just above </body> or in your builder's footer or custom code box.
  3. Using a caching plugin or service? Clear the cache.
  4. Check your chat box is live: press Go live in your dashboard.
  5. Still stuck? Email [email protected] with your website address and platform.
My chat box gave a wrong answer

It answers only from your saved info, so a wrong answer almost always means the info is wrong, missing or out of date. Fix it in Business info & preview, save, and test again in the Preview chat.

My chat box keeps saying the business will confirm

The answer isn't in your info yet. Check the Unanswered tab and add answers there, or fill the gaps your Knowledge percentage lists.

My chat box stopped answering

If a payment failed or your plan was cancelled, your dashboard says your chat is paused because of a billing problem; click Fix billing. Also check that your chat box is live, and check Messages this month. During a free trial, the chat box stops at your plan's limit and asks visitors for their contact details instead. On a paid plan it keeps answering past the limit ($15 per extra 1,500 messages) and only pauses if extra charges reach $300 that month or a charge can't be collected. If your account is past due, it pauses at the limit until your messages reset on the 1st. Check your card on the Billing page, and look for our 80% and 100% usage emails in your billing email inbox.

I'm not getting handoff emails

Check your spam or junk folder, then check the Send handoffs to field in Business info & preview. If it's empty, handoffs go to your login email.
